She-Ra and the Princesses of Power Wiki

A Runestone, or, in the plural form, Runestones is the group of special stones that give the Elemental Princesses of Etheria their powers. They also can form magical connections to First Ones tech, such as the Sword of Protection. When a person or piece of tech forms a connection with a Runestone, it makes that person or tech an elemental.

There are currently six known runestones on Etheria: The Moonstone, The Heart-Blossom, The Pearl, The Fractal Flake, The Black Garnet and the Sword of Protection runestone.

Overview[]

Runestones are the sources of the Elemental Princesses' powers, which are magical and native to Etheria. They help, along with Etheria's Moons, to regulate the weather and magic on the planet. The Runestones are interconnected through all of Etheria via highly advanced pieces of technology left behind by the First Ones. This tech is called the Heart of Etheria. This interconnection means that when one Runestone is affected that all Runestones are affected. We see this at the end of the first season when Entrapta hacks the Black Garnet; this drained power from the other Runestones causing planet-wide destruction.

When the Elemental Princesses use the powers granted to them by the Runestones, the Heart of Etheria connects them to create a fearsome weapon that is controlled by the Sword of Protection. This is what Light Hope meant by "balance the planet", which she told Adora to convince her to use her power.

Since the Runestones provide incredible power, sorcerers refer to the magic they wield as "lesser" compared to that of the Runestones.

Runestones can become corrupted. How this happens and the repercussion of this are currently unknown. The only known instance of a corrupted Runestone is the Fire Runestone.

George and Lance have noted that there are Runestone shards that do not appear to be connected to any kingdom or princess, they keep one in The Library. The Runestone shard is guarded by and connected to an elemental.

Runestones can be used together with spells; Shadow Weaver does this when teleporting from The Moonstone to the Fright Zone with Glimmer and crew.

Known runestones[]

# Name Description Image
1. The Moonstone The Moonstone is Bright Moon's Runestone. Glimmer (currently) and Queen Angella (formerly) both formed connections to the Moonstone. It presumably grants power over light. Moonstone
2. The Heart-Blossom The Heart-Blossom is Plumeria's Runestone. Perfuma has a connection to the Heart-Blossom. It grants powers over plant life. Hearth-Blossom
3. The Pearl The Pearl is Salineas' Runestone. Mermista has a connection to the Pearl. It grants power over water and, seemingly, mermaid transformation. Pearl
4. The Fractal Flake The Fractal Flake is the Kingdom of Snows' Runestone. Frosta has a connection to the Fractal Flake. It grants power over ice. FractalFlake
5. The Black Garnet The Black Garnet originally belonged to Scorpia's family before they gave it to the Horde and Shadow Weaver used it to source her power. Most recently, Scorpia was able to form a connection with the Black Garnet, obtaining power over electricity. Black garnet
6. Sword of Protection Runestone The Runestone in the Sword of Protection is the source of She-Ra's powers. The Sword, and thus the Runestone, is currently wielded by Adora. The Runestone grants greatly enhanced physical traits such as strength and agility, as well as healing. It is the only known Runestone to be portable. It's also the first Runestone that was ever destroyed by the same person who formed a connection to the Runestone. Sword of Protection Runestone
7. The Fire Runestone The Fire Runestone was a Runestone of an unnamed kingdom near Mount Candila. An unnamed princess had a connection to the Runestone long ago. Unlike the other Runestones, this one was artificially made by the First Ones. It is corrupted.[1]
Unnamed (2)
8. Runestone shard George and Lance found a runestone shard near a large spherical piece of First Ones' tech which they brought to the Library. We learn this in the episode "Reunion".

Trivia[]

  • The Moonstone, The Pearl and the Black Garnet are each named after real-life gemstones.
  • Princesses that have a runestone are known as "Elemental Princesses".
  • Princesses that do not have a runestone known as the Non-Elemental Princesses. All have magic, except Entrapta.
  • Oddly, while it is implied that all the princesses must "recharge" their powers, only Glimmer is ever shown to run out of energy/magic. This was due to Glimmer sharing her connection to the Moonstone with Queen Angella.
  • Entrapta is the only princess who rules her own kingdom without being an elemental princess and having a runestone.
