Double Trouble is a shapeshifter mercenary and temporarily a spy for the Horde. They infiltrated the Rebellion under the guise and persona of Flutterina. After being discovered, they decided to ally with Queen Glimmer knowing that they would take advantage over the Horde with the Heart of Etheria.
Appearance[]
Double Trouble's usual form is that of a slim, mint-green-skinned humanoid with a very reptilian appearance. They are roughly a head and a half taller than Catra and sport slicked-back, mid-length blonde hair which is shaved into a undercut at the sides. They have small blonde eyebrows, thick eyelashes, and almond-shaped chartreuse eyes with dark mint-green sclera and slit pupils. An unusual characteristic of their eyes is their second pair of eyelids which blink horizontally. They have long pointed ears that stick sideways from their head, a small nose with slit-like nostrils, and sharp teeth. They have a long tail stemming from the base of their spine and claw-like fingers.
For attire, Double Trouble wears a high-collared, short-sleeved black and dark green leotard with pointed shoulder pads, as well as a large cut-out which exposes part of their back and sides with a strap just above their tail. They also wear pants of the same colors and style which can be mistaken as the lower half of their outfit, thus making it look like a full-length bodysuit instead. Their accessories includes a set of arm-length black gloves which only cover their pinkies and ring fingers, as well as a pair of black high-heeled ankle boots.
Being a shapeshifter, Double Trouble is able to appear in many other forms. While transforming, Double Trouble’s body turns entirely black, aside from their eyes, and their silhouette distorts until they return to normal.
During their cameo in "Princess Prom", Double Trouble wore a set of round earrings, a thick purple choker, and a large ankle-length white fur coat over a lavender blouse. They wore a purple skirt over a set of grayish-purple tights, as well a pair of purple high-heeled ankle boots. At the time, Double Trouble’s hair was styled to rest over their shoulders.
Personality[]
Double Trouble is an exceedingly overconfident and smug creature. They have enough faith in themselves to be able to approach high-ranking Horde officials such as Catra and Scorpia with little fear, despite the danger the others pose. Double Trouble is even unafraid of dealing with Hordak. They shamelessly and constantly compliment themselves on their work, displaying their immense amount of pride.
Double Trouble is extremely proud of their acting, stating that they do more than just change into their targets, but become them emotionally. They spend quite a lot of time in 'character study', preferring to fully understand their targets inside-out. They are also extremely dramatic, making grandiose gestures and speaking similarly to an actor.
They do not enjoy any situation in which they cannot display their talents or garner praise and applause from those around them. This is demonstrated in Season Five when they talk about having successfully infiltrated Horde Prime's ranks by pretending to be a clone, but subsequently left because they found it boring without an audience. Double Trouble also seems to see anyone under Horde Prime's thrall as dull, since they don't make for a very good audience. They specifically seek out a job as a club performer for this reason, so that they can be the center of attention while making money at the same time. In fact, their devotion to their art seems to be one of their strongest motivators, to the point of informing their moral choices.
They greatly enjoy creating chaos between others, particularly friends, and love watching the situation play out. While speaking with Catra, they take great pleasure at the thought of wreaking havoc upon the rebellion. They also display annoyance whenever they fail to sow dissent. They treat war like it's a game, a play that is unfolding.
When speaking with others, Double Trouble is usually very polite. Even when caught sabotaging the Rebellion they remain affable, going so far as to compliment Adora and Glimmer's acting ability. However, when alone, Double Trouble speaks with contempt and frequently insults others, seemingly thinking of themself as superior. They are also very casual while speaking with Catra, referring to her as 'Kitten'.
Double Trouble is not truly allied with the Horde, as they state that they plan to bring their business elsewhere, "perhaps to the other side", should Catra refuse their offer. They also make it clear that they are only sticking around for the money and chaos. Eventually, they turn on the Horde, leaking information to Hordak about Catra's lies to create a diversion for Glimmer. Double Trouble also tells Catra the entire reason for their defection is because the Rebellion has a super weapon which makes them the stronger side, and they intend to end up on the winning side of the war. In the end, however, they leave, presumably to go after their own pursuits.
Double Trouble is adept at fully analyzing a person's character. They have displayed, on a number of occasions, the ability to do this both quickly and thoroughly, figuring out what really makes someone tick. Double Trouble uses this talent to sow dissent within the Rebellion and drive Glimmer and Adora apart. The greatest example of this to date is when they confront Catra a final time after her fight with Hordak. Double Trouble dissects Catra's personality with great accuracy, brutally picking apart her motivations. They are able to identify Catra's obsession with Adora, the way she constantly denies her own need for praise and acknowledgment, and how she always pushes away anyone who cares for her. Double Trouble does this all with a satisfied smirk and a confident tone. They act quite sadistic, taking distinct enjoyment in Catra's despair.
Double Trouble has always made it apparent they value their own life quite highly. They always side with whoever holds the most power in a conflict, and will switch allegiances if that balance changes, not caring about the morality of their actions. The only time they have become genuinely upset was when Perfuma, Sea Hawk, and Scorpia were fighting a mind-controlled Mermista, who was only partially paralyzed from Scorpia's venom at the time and fearing for their life, angrily shouted at the rebels to stop fighting, since they happened to be inside a fragile, underwater bubble. This was a jarring shift from their usual smug demeanor, showing that in drastic cases, they are willing to forego it to save their own life.
Double Trouble can blink horizontally rather than vertically. Additionally, they can lick their eyeballs. Their tail is prehensile and they have been seen using it to hold Bow's tracker pad. Double Trouble also tends to refer to people as "darlings" and often uses nicknames for people rather than their real names, such as 'Kitten' for Catra.
Ultimately, Double Trouble is a mercenary and a survivor, turning on Catra in Season Four finale, "Destiny Part 2", informing her that the way to survive was to ally with the greatest strength, and that was the Princess Alliance at the time.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Shapeshifting - Double Trouble can take on the form of whoever they choose, though they appear to be limited to humanoid forms and do not gain the powers of whoever they become. They can invent their own unique forms and are able to transform individual body parts, such as changing the tip of their tail into a spade or making their hair resemble Entrapta's. Their shapeshifting also does not appear to affect or heal injuries as the scratches they sustained as Catra carried over to their original form.
- Sorcery - Double Trouble has implied they are capable of sorcery, to what extent is unknown, though their shapeshifting is presumably executed this way. It is possible they used magic to escape Glimmer's trap.
Abilities[]
- Impersonation - They take great pride in being able to perfectly recreate the traits and mannerisms of whoever they are copying. Double Trouble is proficient enough to convince Adora that they are Catra and raise no suspicion. They have impersonated nearly every person of importance in both the Horde and the Princess Alliance, and do so well that they have a near-perfect record of fooling everyone they interacted with while practicing their deception. Their most notable impersonation was when they utilized the character Flutterina to devastate the Princess Alliance. They have even fooled Catra, who was well aware of their power, into believing they were Adora.
- Combat - Double Trouble appears to be talented in hand-to-hand combat, capable of fighting Adora in She-Ra form. They seem to prefer kick-based attacks, though they rarely engage in actual combat.
- Espionage - They are very capable of infiltration via their shapeshifting, and can easily get ahold of information for their clients.
- Escapology - Double Trouble has displayed the ability to escape from most traps and restraints, including a metal cage and handcuffs. They also appeared to have been able to escape Glimmer's magical entrapment, though it is possible Glimmer herself let them out.
- Strength - Double Trouble has shown a notable level of strength, lifting a walkway that had fallen on Catra. Though they only just lifted it partway, the action would still be akin to moving a few tons.
- Mobility - They are able to move from place to place in very little time, such as going from Bright Moon to the Whispering Woods, the Fright Zone to Elberon, and from Bright Moon to the Fright Zone in only a few hours.
- Character Deduction - Double Trouble excels in analyzing people, doing this in order to improve their impersonations. Double Trouble uses this skill during the series to drive a wedge between Adora and Glimmer and cause general havoc within the Princess Alliance. Most notably, Double Trouble accurately deduces Catra's personality and drives her into a despondent state by giving her a rundown of all her flaws, though they admit it was not easy.
- Piano Playing: While working at the club, one of the identities Double Trouble used was the piano player, Swen. Under this guise, they acted as a pianist for the club, demonstrating they have enough skill to play professionally; they even improvise to accompany Scorpia's singing, an unplanned performance.
Equipment[]
- Communication pad - Double Trouble utilizes a Horde communication pad. It appeared to have been confiscated by the Rebellion when they were captured, though they presumably regained it after defecting to them.
Relationships[]
Catra[]
Double Trouble sought out Catra as an opportunity to use their skills and get money operating for the Horde. Initially, Catra was suspicious of them, but after seeing Double Trouble in action, she decided to hire them. Catra seemed to tolerate the shapeshifter far more than she did Scorpia and appeared to be grateful after Double Trouble pulled them out from under the debris. Double Trouble spoke to her in a very casual manner, lacking their usual politeness and nicknaming her "Kitten". In return, Catra seemed to find them amusing and enjoyed their presence, though seemed dismayed when Double Trouble made it clear they were only there because Catra was paying. Double Trouble did not seem to care much for Catra's personal plights and even seemed to find it entertaining. They did not seem fazed by the fact that they gave away the Horde's plan to Glimmer, and by doing so betrayed Catra.
Later on, they more blatantly betray Catra by sending information to the Rebellion and telling Hordak all about Catra's deception. They then confront Catra, explaining they have finally figured her out, and transform into everyone she has had any relationship with to emphasize their point. Double Trouble analyzes Catra's entire character and gives her a rundown of her faults, including her obsession with Adora, her desire to be acknowledged, and how she has pushed others away. Double Trouble then goes on to state it is for Catra's own good that she knows, before explaining it was a diversion and they have sided with the Rebellion as they have a higher chance of winning the war. Double Trouble then leaves, satisfied with Catra's horrified reaction.
In Season Five, Double Trouble talks about their job ending with Catra, appearing to be unfazed by the development and calling Catra their 'Cash-Kitten', indicating she was little more to them than an income source.
Glimmer[]
Glimmer is the only character who Double Trouble does not treat with any politeness. Before being properly acquainted, Double Trouble repeatedly mocked Glimmer while speaking to Catra, demonstrating a low opinion of her. They often took jabs at Glimmer's powers and ability to lead, usually doing this by shapeshifting into her and emphasizing her anger and referring to her powers as 'sparkles'. Double Trouble also seemed to both look down upon and unable to comprehend her friendship with Adora and Bow.
During Glimmer's interrogation attempts, Double Trouble was rude and insulted Glimmer's attempts at truth spells, and very obviously had little respect for her. While under the guise of Flutterina, they often insulted Glimmer while alone, and took a particularly active role in manipulating her. Double Trouble even stated they found causing chaos between Glimmer and Adora enjoyable and was thrilled by how much damage they were doing. After Glimmer was finally able to execute a truth spell, Double Trouble gleefully told her the Horde's plans, with a clear motivation to rile her up even more. Despite this, Double Trouble decides to switch sides and betray the Horde, having realized with the power of the Heart of Etheria, the Rebellion is clearly the stronger side. As such, they provide Glimmer with the information necessary for her to infiltrate the Fright Zone, and intentionally trick Catra into setting her troops up for an ambush, getting them wiped out in the process.
Double Trouble has admitted to having some respect for the queen after Glimmer uses Adora as bait. They explain to Catra that they had seen Glimmer as someone incapable of doing anything herself with no ability to get her hands dirty. Double Trouble seemed pleasantly surprised after seeing Glimmer's underhanded tactics against Catra, though this did not stop them from using the very thing that impressed them to manipulate Glimmer against Catra.
Bow[]
Double Trouble does not think highly of Bow. While reporting to Catra, they mocked Bow over the constant exposure of his stomach, saying he does not own 'real' shirts. They seemed amused that Bow got injured in a fight against the Horde, but disappointed that Adora healed him. Double Trouble seemed to find Bow mostly annoying as he constantly subverted their attempts at ruining the Best Friends Squad. They also both stole and destroyed his tracker pad, demonstrating a strong lack of respect.
Adora[]
Double Trouble first met Adora while under the guise of Catra and fought her, with the warrior never learning who she was fighting. In their second meeting, Double Trouble pretended to be Flutterina and played the part of the starstruck fangirl, fawning over Adora's exploits. They then lured Adora into a trap set by Catra, and joined the Rebellion to act as a spy against them. Double Trouble took great pleasure in causing Adora grief and wedging her and Glimmer apart. In private, they made fun of her, though not to the extent of Glimmer and Bow and mainly for Catra's entertainment.
They analyzed Adora's personality well enough to understand her need to protect Glimmer, and used that to sabotage her relationship with the Queen. When verbally sowing discord between the two did not work, they amped up their tactics and forced Glimmer and Adora into a situation where Glimmer ended up going against Adora's orders. Double Trouble was apparently confident enough in their work to fall for Glimmer and Adora's fake fighting, immediately leading to them being discovered as the mole. While surrounded by the princesses, they opted to kick Adora extremely hard in the shins and bolt. Afterwards, they riled Glimmer up by transforming into a caricature of Adora.
While they rarely manipulated Adora directly, they apparently understood her relationship to Catra well enough to deduce Catra was obsessed with her.
Hordak[]
Double Trouble is polite and courteous while speaking with Hordak, though this contrasts their casual and almost insulting behavior towards him. In their first meeting, Double Trouble disguises themself as Catra and tricks Hordak until Catra herself appears. This is one of the few times they ever seem uneasy around him after Hordak gets visibly upset with them, even hiding behind Catra.
Later on, they intentionally infuriate Hordak by transforming their hair to resemble Entrapta's and using their shapeshifting to irritate him. However, they show the Horde leader very little respect as they begin to casually drop facts about Catra's involvement in exiling Entrapta, pretending to believe Hordak was aware of the whole thing. They show next to no fear as they purposely antagonize Hordak, despite the risks. This makes Double Trouble one of the few characters to be unafraid of Hordak, with any moments of fear being extremely brief.
Scorpia[]
Double Trouble is initially uninterested in Scorpia and is aghast by her wild theories concerning what they are when the shapeshifter impersonates her. However, they are later shown to be happy when Scorpia applauds their performance as Catra.
In Season Five, they are unnerved by Scorpia's appearance at the club they work at, though they at first decide to help her out by providing her accompaniment when she sings on the stage. They afterward try to get her to go away when she tries to recruit their Peekablue disguise. However, they accidentally tip her off after saying the phrase "[getting] into character..." which Scorpia recalls Double Trouble stating in front of her before. They become worried when Scorpia becomes suspicious and outright panic when she catches on to the deceit, seeing her as a big enough threat that they try to run, only to wind up being stung.
Double Trouble is annoyed after being captured by Scorpia, but offers up intel on Horde Prime when she becomes disappointed about the failed mission. When they are forced to hand over the info for free, they attempt to intimidate the Princesses by explaining that Horde Prime will kill their friends. Double Trouble becomes visibly angry when Scorpia, Perfuma and Sea Hawk engage Mermista in combat in an underwater club, pointing out the dangers of doing so. Instead of leaving the paralyzed mercenary to be chipped, to their surprise, Scorpia carries them out. Double Trouble is shocked when she refuses to escape with everyone and sacrifices herself to ensure Perfuma, Sea Hawk and Double Trouble make it out safely.
Sea Hawk[]
Double Trouble presumably met Sea Hawk while disguised as Flutterina and seemed to not think very highly of him, disguising themself as Frosta to lure Mermista away from him before becoming Perfuma to confuse the sailor further. They are seen smirking as they do this.
In Season Five, they are captured by Perfuma, Scorpia and Sea Hawk and are unhappy about their circumstances. When they are forced to hand over intel on Horde Prime, they try to intimidate the Princesses and Sea Hawk with the knowledge that their friends are doomed. Double Trouble is upset when the trio fight against Mermista while in an underwater club, and they point out that fighting in there is a very bad idea. While still paralyzed from Scorpia's venom, Double Trouble is passed off to Sea Hawk and is happy when he complies with their odd demand for him to raise their hand in the air so they can be dramatic while revealing a secret elevator. They also refer to Sea Hawk as "Hot Stuff".
History[]
Past[]
Nothing is known about Double Trouble's past.
Season One[]
Double Trouble is seen attending the Princess Prom. How and why are unknown.
Season Four[]
Double Trouble witnesses Adora, Bow, Huntara, and Perfuma enter the Valley of the Lost. However, they decide to approach Catra to offer their services. They take the form of Scorpia and act differently than Scorpia would, which lets Catra know something is up. Catra pins them against a wall and they shapeshift to mimic Catra's form. After cleverly getting themself out of handcuffs, they convince Catra of their usefulness by fooling Adora into believing they are Catra. Following their 'audition', Catra welcomes them into the fold.
Double Trouble infiltrates the Rebellion under the guise of 'Flutterina' and successfully thwarts a number of their missions against the Horde by leaking intel to Catra. This string of losses causes much anxiety for Glimmer, which Double Trouble delights in. Catra appears to take a liking to them after Double Trouble rescues her from debris, but they explain to her, "I live to serve, for a price," thus indicating that they only aid Catra for the money.
They are instructed to use Glimmer and Adora's friction against them and do so to great effect, causing the two to fight each constantly. Eventually, the Rebellion grows suspicious that there is a spy in their midst, and Double Trouble takes advantage of it to keep them distracted while the Horde takes Salineas. Even though they end up captured, Double Trouble succeeds in buying the Horde enough time to conquer the seas. They become an uncooperative prisoner, mocking all attempts to get information out of them. However, after Glimmer succeeds with a truth spell, they happily give it to her, telling the queen about Horde Prime's imminent invasion.
Sometime offscreen, Double Trouble makes a deal to sabotage the Horde and Glimmer lets them go free. They return to the Fright Zone and tell Catra that Bright Moon is undefended without She-Ra. They advise her to attack it and win the war, before going to Hordak and exposing Catra's treachery. It turns out they set up Catra's armies for an ambush by the Princess Alliance, wiping them out. They go to Catra and brutally lay bare her flaws and insecurities: her obsession with Adora, her need to be acknowledged and how she drives everyone away and blames everyone but herself. Double Trouble explains to her that they defected as the Rebellion is stronger than the Horde with the Heart of Etheria at their disposal, and that all her work will be torn down, bringing Catra to a despondent state. They then leave, having completed their work.
Season Five[]
Mermista gets wind of Prince Peekablue frequenting a club and decides that since Peekablue has the ability to see into the universe using his power of "farsight", the Rebellion could use him to find their friends in space. Thus, she makes a plan to recruit Peekablue, oblivious to the fact that the Peekablue she was trying to find was only Double Trouble in disguise. Another disguise they used was Swen [3].
Mermista, Perfuma, Sea Hawk and Scorpia go to the Enchanted Grotto searching for Peekablue, and discover he apparently works as an entertainer. Scorpia manages to get backstage and tries to convince them to join the Rebellion, only to become suspicious when the performer uses the term "get into character". Scorpia deduces it is not the real Peekablue and tricks Double Trouble into outing themself and when they try to flee, she stings them, causing them to rapidly shapeshift before passing out. Perfuma ties them up and the group interrogates Double Trouble, who tries to get them to pay for their information before relenting when Perfuma threatens violence.
Double Trouble explains that after Horde Prime's invasion, now jobless, they wandered through occupied territory and decided to pose as a clone to get close to Horde Prime. However, they quickly got bored since they garnered no praise or attention for their abilities and left. However, during their time within the Horde's ranks, they found out Horde Prime had created a barricade with his armada, surrounding the planet, and was viciously angry with Adora for making off with Catra. Double Trouble even became aware that Adora, Bow, Glimmer, and Catra were on their way back to Etheria, and that Horde Prime was mind controlling the Etherians via chips. They later learned of Prince Peekablue, and made the decision to disguise themself as him, thinking Peekablue's reputation as a rarely-seen seer could help make money.
They explain they know nothing of the real Peekablue's whereabouts, but hand over what they know about Horde Prime, and reveal that roughly half the patrons at the club have been chipped. Mermista enters and starts a fight, having been chipped herself. Double Trouble, still partially paralyzed from Scorpia's venom, complains about them fighting in a delicate underwater bubble. They get Sea Hawk to bring them to the stage, where they manage to activate a secret elevator to bring themself, Sea Hawk, and Perfuma back to the surface, though Scorpia is left behind.
Double Trouble shows up again in Seaworthy for the final battle against the Horde. They disguise themself as a clone to get close to a pair of real Horde Clones, allowing them to throw the two off a cliff.

Trivia[]
- This is the first time Double Trouble has appeared outside the toy line and a single comic, as they never appeared in the original She-Ra cartoon.
- They are the only character in the series to appear in both the villain's shot and the hero's shot in the same intro, since they appear in the villain shot for the season 4 intro, but they are also Flutterina, who appears in the hero's shot of the same intro.
- Double Trouble made a cameo appearance in Princess Prom.
- Double Trouble is the first known non-binary character in the series.
- They are known in Spain as "Dupla" and, in Latin America, they are referred to as "Doppler Morpher".
- Their voice actor, Jacob Tobia, is known for their LGBT+ advocacy, and is non-binary just like their character.
- Double Trouble has admitted to being unable to cry on cue. According to them, the only thing that works is imagining children falling, though it is usually tears of laughter rather than sadness.
- Despite the clear intent to make this character non-binary, their gender is inconsistent across the various international dubs of the series.
- They are referred to as female in the French dub of the series, most likely because gender-neutral pronouns such as "iel" have yet to be fully recognized in the language.
- In the Mandarin transition, they are referred to as a female. They use the feminine pronoun "她", as shown through subtitles. There are not any gender-neutral pronouns that describe humans in Chinese. Though 'it', meaning for implying non-human and gender-neutral, exists (它), it is not as popular to describe a character.
- In the Cantonese translation, their gender is unknown as all pronouns (he/she/they/it) are all one-word "佢"
- In the Brazilian Portuguese translation, they are referred to as "she", but has a "male" voice.
- In the Polish translation of the series, Double Trouble was portrayed as a man.
- Double Trouble is the only character to be a part of both the Horde and the Rebellion's group shots in the same opening. They stand behind Scorpia in the Horde's shot and take Entrapta's place in the Rebellion's shot as Flutterina.
- Due to their shapeshifting, Double Trouble has been voiced by a good portion of the major voice actors for the series.
- In a Twitter Q&A, ND Stevenson and Jacob Tobia stated, in response to a question as to what Double Trouble’s 'true form' is, that no one knows what Double Trouble really looks like, but it does not matter. They are always themself no matter what form they take.[4]
- In the same Q&A, Jacob explained they believe Double Trouble is a stage name, though ND replied that in the world of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, there are some very odd names, so only Double Trouble knows.[5]
- ND and Jacob also agreed that Double Trouble and Spinnerella might get along.[6]
- ND Stevenson has always loved shapeshifters, and shapeshifter characters such as Mystique from X-Men and Zam Wesell from Star Wars were some of his inspirations for Double Trouble.[7]
- The name of one of their fake identities, Swen, was used before in the 1985 series for a different character, the second-in-command and loyal friend of Sea Hawk.
- Their voice actor called them gay in a Tweet [8].
- In the same tweet, they also called them an actor, model, and singer.
- Double Trouble is the only character with a power unique to themself that is not explicitly confirmed to be a Princess or practice magic.
- Multiple characters from the 1985 TV series continuity have only made appearances as alternative disguises of Double Trouble’s, including Flutterina, Peekablue, and Swen.
- Like Catra, Double Trouble has solid colored eyes besides their pupils and membranes. However, in "Perils of Peekablue" there was an error with Double Trouble's eyes being drawn as having chartreuse-colored irises against dark green sclerae. This was later fixed in "Heart Part 2".
- Several times in the storyboards for the show, Double Trouble is actually referred to with she/her pronouns. It is not known why this is, but it could possibly be that Double Trouble may have only been made non-binary later on in production, or perhaps the crew not being sure if a non-binary character would be approved.
- On Instagram, ND Stevenson and Jacob Tobia suggested that post-finale, Double Trouble rehabilitates some of the clones and teaches them acting, and starts a theatre troupe with them.[9]
- When asked about Double Trouble's gender in a Reddit Q&A, Jacob Tobia said "Double Trouble's true gender is chaos."[10]
