The joys of drawing a layer, loving it, locking it, then turning it off to work on other bits.

Thank you all for the comments here and in the cuteness post. Anywhere really, I enjoy making this stuff and it means so much that you all like what I make. I really appreciate it. You all make this space very accepting and supportive. /genuine

It feels like my stuff gets pushed aside or ignored in other fandom spaces because it's not Canon Catradora. No matter how much time and effort I put into the art. Even if it's Canon characters by themselves. I don't know why it happens... it just seems to... /tangent

So, the Chibi art inspired more. I worked on this today. I don't know if I will color it...

I know it's for a meme. But this is the best Catra face I've ever drawn and it's my new favorite. I want to try really hard to replicate it and use it going forward.

Strange? No. It's just a style preference.

I see a lot of art using different methods. I prefer the human-like eyes because it's more fun to paint. The big canon colored eyes don't really look right when I do that.

I try both but I feel like the canon eyes don't fit my style as well.

Etherian Police? Bring it on.

I've been venturing outside of my usual to try and find where I want it to really be. I think I'm finally at the point where I can stop trying to imitate and follow instructions.

I spent days on a very realistic outfit redesign study. Absolutely going mad with the anatomical details and volumetric shading to create form without lines. Then I went and made all the layers so I can literally turn on and off layers to make different looks.

Yesterday and Today I went crazy deep into Super adorable, Cell shading. Bright colors. Etc.

It has been a whirlwind of experiments and learning. ^_^

[edit: which is also why I have not posted any fanfic chapters. I have been hyper-focused on drawing. oops]

It's super late at night. I don't want to create a new post. But I got stuck on making absolute cuteness this evening.

Catra's is way more simplified because it's 2am and I should be sleeping.

You deserve some spotlight. You put in more than enough work to warrant it. You're kind and helpful all the time. You have created a backbone of engagement. You nearly always have something new and wonderful to share of your own creations. This place would not be what it is without you. You are amazing and what you do is invaluable.

But - and I say this with Kallen poking me to advocate for it - Always remember to take care of yourself. We want you to be a part of this community for a long s you are happy to. You don't have any obligation to us, the wiki, or anything like that. So I hope you always keep a happy and healthy relationship to the work you do. Take breaks when you need it. And just keep having fun. /positive /genuine.

Well, yes, it does involve practice. But then every drawing is more practice. Each of my drawings has been practiced for a completely new pose and perspective because I don't get to draw much.

I can also say a lot of it comes from being a fitness nerd. I plan out all my drawings by anatomy first. Muscle groups, rib cage, and hip bone. Etc.

Practicing anatomy is boring but it's very helpful. You can simplify it much further than I do and focus on shapes - arms and legs as cylinders and hips/chest as boxes. There are tons of yt videos to help.

I use FireAlpaca 99% of the time because I am a simple person. More complex programs drive me nuts. There are a few brushes pre-loaded that mimic pencil textures. I use the Pencil (Canvas) and use a lighter gray color. On this one I used the "Analog Pen" for the first time to do line art.

The other main thing is the pressure sensitivity. I have the tablet software calibrated to be a rather long pressure curve. That way I can vary my line weight when sketching. All of that sketch was done with the settings below. (Except the stripes, that was a different brush).

I start of a 4k by 4k canvas for just about all my projects.

Tablet is a Huoin Kamvas 16 Pro.

I wrote a one shot of What if Adora got captured with Glimmer instead of Catra. What would Catra do?

It was sparked by a discussion AdmiralZod started. It's link on the fanfction archive but the link goes to Ao3. If anyone is interested.

I think the other What-If I've toyed with and really wish I could write is "What if the magic of She-Ra was tied to Etheria, not a person. What if it chose the person with the best intentions. What if Adora breaking the sword freed that magic?"

[In the room with the fail-safe. The group argues with Adora taking the code without She-Ra]

"Then do it. Say the magic words. Call up She-Ra. Sacrifice yourself like you always do!" Catra snarls.

Adora stands reluctantly. Dusting herself off, she hold out her hand. Her face stern with focus. 

Her eyes flicker slightly with determinations. Only the hint of a blue glow.

She raises her hand up. Straining to call on the magic. A slight form of a sword sparkles and shimmers in her hand.

Catra slams her eyes shut as the cycle is about to repeat itself. nd, like always, she's helpless to stop it."For the honor of grayskull..." Catra whispers mockingly to herself. Her memories of how many times she's heard those words. How many times that sword was pointed at her. How many times she wished it had never happened to Adora. All the weight Adora shouldered because of it. How much it crushed her. Her teeth suddenly grind at the words Shadow Weaver feed Adora out in the hallway. How devastated Adora had looked. That manipulation tactic all to familiar. Her heart sinks... "Why does it always have to be Adora? Why can't someone save her for a change?" 

Everyone turns as the light flares up. Her silhouette shimmers in a rainbow of colors. Growing taller and her hair longer. A sword forms in her hand. Her boots take on a winged design to represent Glimmer. A heart shaped chest piece from Bow. A segmented armor over her tail like Scorpia's and her old face mask as a tiara. Catra's eyes widen in worry as she looks down from her new height.

"W-WHAT!" Shadow Weaver shouts in disgust.

"How?" Adora says, slumping to the ground.

Y'all keep pointing out the eyes and that's the one part I feel like I got wrong XD /lh

I was going for thoughtful but I swear she just looks mad. But then again, it's Catra and emotions... Mad could be accurate without Melog nearby.

There's still more I can improve on. But then it would never be "done".

I learned a lot putting this one together. Even if it took a long time to figure it all out. I'm wobbling between painting it all n at once vs. hard light/multiply layers. It makes for a very messy layer stack. But it works better for my brain.

An even though the color was what I learned from, I still like the black and white version better (just personal preference). I need to find a way to keep my sketchy style I love and do respectable line art. /lh
