Wishing you sweet dreams for fanfic Day 14!
Sleep
The little princess wasn't lonely, but sometimes she wondered what had happened to her parents.
Not in a sad way, but more just . . . puzzled.
Usually, her mother had been the one who brought her little snacks so she wouldn't get too hungry, but then, one day . . . she didn't.
The last time she had seen either of her parents was 86 . . . 87 . . . no, 86 days ago.
After that, the baker woman or the soda pop man brought meals to her.
But now that she had finished building Leonardo, her butler-bot, things were even better!
Leonardo always came at exactly the right times, and he was so cute!
She had lots of other bots to keep her company, too!
So everything was all right.
And she had plenty of uninterrupted time to work on her experiments!
Entrapta tightened a few bolts on the framework she had erected.
As she did so, she reached over for the last tiny cupcake on the platter nearby.
She had to tilt her head slightly to be able to reach it with a ponytail, but not so much as before. Her hair was really starting to grow out!
She glanced at the morsel and grinned.
"This one's a little frog!" she noted with glee before popping the artfully made cake into her mouth. She briefly wondered what frogs would taste like, but she was almost sure they wouldn't be so sweet.
Now that the framework was complete, she began to wire the camera and microphones to it.
After that she would do a final test with the electrical sensors.
She was being extra careful because she really wanted to get this one right.
If everything was set up correctly, then the equipment would monitor her movements, sounds, and biorhythms while she slept.
She was desperately curious to know more about sleep.
Because, recently, that's the one place where she sometimes did see her mom and dad.
She had no idea what happened or where she went when she slept, but, she reasoned, if she could figure that out, then she would know where her parents had gone.
She knew that her mom was a princess and her dad was a prince.
That made Entrapta a princess, too!
That's why she had the kitchen staff to make her meals and an entire castle with all the space she needed.
Entrapta wondered if her mom and dad were simply somewhere else in the castle.
She smiled as she arranged the sensors around her head like a veil.
Tonight, she would find out!
--------------
The princess was so excited that it took longer than usual for her to fall asleep, but she had been working non-stop for many hours and was tired.
Eventually, though she couldn't have said when or how, she was somewhere else.
She was floating over the whole world, and she was in her laboratory, which was enormous and full of sparkling equipment! As much as she could ever need!
And she was in the middle of it, building a new machine that would have a powerful lens that could look through anything and see how it worked!
Entrapta somehow knew that it would take a very long time, but each moment she was getting closer to completing it.
And she heard a voice that sounded like her mom's.
"Entrapta? Entrapta, can you look at me?"
Entrapta tried, but her work was too exciting.
"I want you to hear what I'm saying. Do you hear me?"
Entrapta could definitely hear her. "Yup!"
There was a slight hesitation. "We're going away. Your dad and I."
She was getting close. She could almost see the whole world. "Okay."
Now, she heard her dad's voice. It sounded close. "We're going to the war."
That sounded interesting. Entrapta turned and caught a glimpse of her dad from the corner of her eyes, but it was really only a shadow. "Why?"
"Because the other princesses need us? We may be gone a long time."
Entrapta knew the war was very busy, so that made sense. "Okay, bye!" she said brightly. But somehow she knew her mom wasn't done talking.
And everything in the room began spinning around her in a circle now.
"Entrapta, what if you never see us again? How do you feel about that?"
The princess hardly hesitated. "Excited! When I finish this, I can learn about everything!"
Her mom sounded different, her voice quieter. "You know that we love you, right?"
Entrapta knew that. "Yeah." They had always told her so.
The voice didn't return, and Entrapta realized that she was almost finished. She needed one more piece to keep the machine together.
Little bits of it kept coming loose, and she held them down with strands of her hair. She looked around for the missing piece, but everything was swirling around so fast, so it was hard to see . . .
---------------
Entrapta opened her eyes, and she was suddenly wide awake!
Her mind fizzed with thoughts.
Her mom's and dad's words now felt like part of a memory she once had. Some of what had happened in her sleep seemed to have happened to her before. Other parts were new.
But she had finally remembered that her parents had gone to the war.
And now it dawned on her that they might never come back.
She tried to figure out how she felt about that.
And she thought about how her mom had told her that they loved her.
She knew that was true because they had taken care of her.
They had given her the whole castle and helped her to start her laboratory with everything she needed for her investigations.
They had made sure she would be safe and left alone so that she could perform her experiments.
Entrapta wondered if she would ever love anyone like that.
And as she removed the sensors from her body and clicked off the camera, a gush of thoughts and feelings were rushing through her mind.
Reviewing her data could wait.
She felt a sudden, pressing urge to record everything she thought about what she had just experienced and the feelings she felt now before any of it could fade away.
So she pulled her recorder out of her overalls pocket, took a deep breath, and clicked the button to begin:
"Log entry number 145 . . . "
